This process shows how to work an EC through its lifecycle to the Complete state.
The process for your particular team will vary.
See Create an EC to submit a new EC.
Newly created ECs begin in the Submit state.
Connect Parts to the EC:
See Create an EC for methods to create an EC with parts already attached.
Add / Remove Parts only in EC Submit State.
See Attach Parts to EC, Add Parts to Existing EC, Create a Part in an EC.
PreRelease Specifications
Define the Change
Promote the Part(s) to Review
Not possible before connection to an EC
Promote the EC to Evaluate
Change is ready to be assessed
Parts may be Demoted / Promoted between Preliminary / Review
Parts that were attached to the EC For Revise, are revised, creating new revisions in Preliminary state
Parts must be in Review before continuing
In the Evaluate state, plans for parts made to the current design must be considered.
This information is entered by the EC Owner, EC Analyst, Manufacturing Engineer, or Component Engineer as Disposition Codes for the affected items.
Create Impact Analysis
Promote Impact Analysis to Complete
Promote EC to Review
Review Route Template (EC Reviewer List)
EC Review Route automatically promotes the EC
Approval Route Template (EC Approval List) (conditional)
All Parts (Affected Items) in Review State
Disposition Codes Assigned
Impact Analyses Complete
When the evaluation work on the EC is complete, promote EC to Review.
EC Review Route Starts
Tasks are Assigned (ECRB)
Part changes are no longer allowed after completion of the Review Route
ECRB/ Reviewer scrutiny is necessary to help prevent time consuming errors
Parts may not be demoted while EC is in Review State
EC may not be demoted during Review Route
Review Route must be deleted to demote the EC
The EC Owner may Edit Details on the EC Properties page to transfer ownership to a project Manufacturing Engineer, or the current owner or EC Analyst may continue to run the EC.
The Review route automatically promotes the EC to Approved when all reviewer route tasks are complete.
EC Affected Items are automatically promoted to Approved (manual promotion is not allowed).
Parts in Approved state may not be demoted.
In the Approved state, the EC checks the Validation Required field.
Validation Required = No:
EC Automatically Promotes from Approved to Complete
EC Parts (Affected Items) are Released
Validation Required = Yes:
EC Automatically Promotes from Approved to Implement
EC Parts (Affected Items) remain in Approved State (and may not be demoted)
The EC and parts are Approved and ready for implementation work.
The EC Owner can Add Tasks and Routes for this workflow.
These steps are for implementation and validation of an already Reviewed and Approved design.
Part changes are no longer allowed after completion of the Review Route.
Problems found after part Approval must be fixed by Releasing the part and then revising it again in another EC.
If a route was created for implementation tasks, the EC automatically promotes to Validate when the last route task is complete.
Otherwise, when the implementation work is finished, the EC Owner or EC Analyst manually promotes the EC to Validate.
When the validation work is complete, the EC is ready for Formal Approval.
The Owner/EC Analyst should review all implementation data and ensure the correct Approval Route Template is on the EC.
Approval Route Begins:
Tasks are assigned for Manufacturing and Management Approval of the Change
Assignees complete tasks.
Route Completion Automatically Promotes EC to Complete
When the final approval task is complete, the EC automatically promotes to the Complete state.
Email notifications are automatically sent to the Distribution List, assignees, EC Owner/Analyst.
All Affected Items automatically promote to Release.
