Regulated products require regulatory certification or approval -- most often due to an electrical power supply that could shock the user or electro-magnetic emissions that could interfere with other devices.
All Product Hierarchy items, starting with Product Lines, have a Regulated field that is set to Yes, No, or Possible.
Once an item is set to Regulated, all children in the hierarchy are also Regulated:
All Product Families in the Printer Product Line are Regulated (Regulated = Yes).
All Product Families in Product Lines other than Options (and Printers) are Not Regulated (Regulated = No).
Product Families in the Options Product Line may or may not be Regulated (Regulated = Yes, No, or Possible).
Child Product Models of a Product Family that is Regulated = Possible must be either Regulated = Yes or No.
Regulated Product Families and child Product Models and Product Configurations require unique names for identification of certification by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
The Machine Type Hierarchy identifies Regulated products:
Machine Type defines Product Family when Regulated = Yes
Machine Types are a 4 digit number: XXXX
Machine Type Model defines Product Model when Regulated = Yes
Machine Type Models are a 7 digit number: XXXX-XXX
A Regulated product configuration must be connected to a Machine Type Model that is connected to the parent Product Model in order to promote to Active.
A product configuration of a Regulated Product Model automatically is assigned the Machine Type Model of the parent Product Model;
If the Product Model has more than one Machine Type Model, you may choose one or more during the creation of the product configuration.
Non-Regulated (Regulated = No) Product Families and child Product Models and Product Configurations do not have a direct connection to a defining Machine Type.
Non-Regulated Product Configurations may have Supporting Relationships to Machine Types or Machine Type Models of the products that use them.
Product Configurations of options, service parts, and supplies are not defined by a Machine Type but are used by other products that are Machine Types.
