Locking a file prevents anyone else from checking out the file or checking in an updated version of the file.
When a file is locked, it can not be checked out, so the Checkout icon changes to the Checkin icon.
Only the user who locked a file may check in, or unlock without updating, the locked file.
You may hover the cursor over the Lock icon to display the User ID of the person who locked the file.
Checking out a file also locks it.
A locked file may be downloaded.
A file may be manually locked if you have a version of the file that you wish to check in, but you did not check out the file in the first place.
A file must be locked (either manually or through checking out) before checking in a new version.
When viewing a list of documents, the Actions column lists the files in each document with icons for working with each file.

Click the Lock icon next to a file to lock it.
The Lock icon will change to an Unlock .
When viewing document Files, each file is listed on the table.

Click the Lock icon in the Actions column to lock the file.
The Lock icon will change to an Unlock .
A Lock icon displays in the padlock column.
To unlock a locked file without checking in a new version, click the Unlock icon.
